It can be a big surprise to learn that you are pregnant with twins, triplets or more and suddenly many of your expectations and plans change. You may have thought about how you will feed your multiple babies but, if not, heres our potted guide to your multiple options..in Part 1 we discuss Breastfeeding Twins (the tips also apply for triplets, quads etc)

Breastfeeding your twins or more can help you create that special and necessary bond with multiple babies. Many mothers have nursed their twins and triplets and you can enjoy nurturing your babies in this special way too!

Although it can seem daunting, breastfeeding twins (or more) is no different in principle to breastfeeding a single baby. Just make sure the positioning is right for both of them. Your body will make enough milk to feed two babies but it is important to remember to maintain a good diet regardless of how many babies you are feeding.

5 Tips for Success

Plan Ahead

• Talk to a breastfeeding counsellor who has experience of twins and multiples
• Read up! Mothering Multiples gives specific advice on breastfeeding twins.
• Remain flexible about feeding options, expressing breastmilk is another option.
  

Start Early

• Nurse early and often to get a good start.
• Your new babies will feed every 2-3 hours, so you will nurse at least 8 times a day!
• Health problems may mean you need to express your milk every 2-3 hours instead.

Co-ordinate Feeds

• Once breastfeeding is established, you may find tandem feeding easier (both at once).
• Switching them from one side to the other, at alternate feeds, may help if one is struggling.

Be Kind to Yourself

• It takes 6 weeks to establish breastfeeding and can be very demanding and exhausting.
• Whether you breastfeed for a day or a year be kind to yourself and proud of your achievements.
