Special Needs Pushchairs - Buying Guide
Many families with one or two children who have a disability that affects their mobility require a special needs pushchair. We have a selection of single and double buggies that are suitable for families looking for the freedom to get out and about with their children.
The Twin Major Pushchair is a custom-built, double pushchair designed for older children who have difficulty walking and is registered with with MHRA as a Class I Medical Device. A strong. lighweight folding double buggy which has been tested to 25kg in each seat, this is recommended for children from around 2 years old up to the age of approx 10 years.
Suitable for families with twins or with one older child has special needs but they also need to transport a younger sibling. Mainsteam and special schools as well as other carers and organisations have also found this twin stroller useful where they need to accomodate a range of ages and disabilities.
The Maclaren Major Elite Pushchair is a single stroller designed for older children with special needs and is suitable from around 2 years old to approx 10 years old and is registered with with MHRA as a Class I Medical Device for diabled children.
The Major Elite special needs pushchair has been developed to meet the demand for an everyday buggy for a child, who as a result of a disability, has a need for a portable, parent-wheeled transport. The buggy can be supplied as a basic model or as a package, with the addition of a full pack of coordinating accessories including sun canopy, raincover, padded seat liner, footmuff, lateral supports, chest pad and shopping basket.
After working on this for over two years, we now offer a double pushchair that can be adapted for one or two children with special needs. The Mountain Buggy Terrain Double Buggies have many options including a deeper, hammock-style seat unit, tall sunhood and single extended footplate that allow for taller and/or older children to be accomodated. The twin buggy is suitable from birth (with carrycot), from 3 months in the standard seat and can be adapted for children from 3 years to approx 9 years and even small adults. TwinsUK are the only company that provide a fully tested double special needs pushchair within the world. Tested to British Standards and beyond, the buggy can hold one or two children up to 30kg each in the deep seats and 15kg in the standard seat (suitable from 3 months-4 years). It is also registered with the MHRA as a Class I Medical Device.
Traditional wheelchairs are far too expensive for rough and muddy roads. but these pushchairs provide a comfortable and smooth ride and people love them as they don't look 'medical' but are friendly and inviting for all ages. The Baby Jogger Independence Advance is from approx age 4 to small adult size with maximum carrying weight 100lbs (7 stone/ 45kilos) and the Baby Jogger Freedom Advance Mobility (to 200lbs) - these are single pushchairs for children and adults with physical disabilities to help them pursue an active lifestyle.
