Medela Haberman Special Needs Feeder
Medela Haberman Special Needs Feeder
Although most mothers and babies can breastfeed without special assistance. sometimes occasional help is needed. Premature babies. failure-to-thrive babies. and babies with specific impairments. such as neurological challenges. may require extra attention.
The Haberman Feeder is a specialized feeder designed for babies with facial or oral problems such as cleft lip/palate. weak babies. Down's Syndrome or neurological difficulties that hamper their ability to nurse.
This type of feeder rewards babies who have even the weakest feeding effort. The one-way valve prevents flooding and overwhelming the baby.It can also be helpful with colic. The Haberman Feeder contains: 150ml collection container; teat; collar; disc; white membrane and instructions.
Please seek advice from a health professional when using this product.
Aditional information:
Special design features make the Haberman Feeder uniquely responsive to the baby's nursing efforts. The slit-valve in the teat regulates milk flow from zero to maximum. depending on its orientation in the baby's mouth. As milk is drawn out of the teat by even the slightest action of the baby's tongue and gums. air enters the bottle at the same rate through an inlet groove in the disc. Consequently. there is no turbulence. Milk flows in only one direction - into the reservoir behind the teat. The reservoir always remains full. and none of the baby's effort is wasted. If the baby cannot nurse at all. or needs a little help. the caregiver can sqeeze and release a limited amount of milk (about 1/4 teaspoon) from the reservoir into the baby's mouth.
The Haberman Feeder never floods. Enlarging the hole of an ordinary nipple does not solve your feeding problems. Your baby cannot stop the flow of feed in order to relax and breathe. Panic and choking soon result. The Haberman Feeder has a slit-valve in the mouthpiece which opens only when your baby sucks. Your baby has complete control and is never overwhelmed. It also has the advantage of variable flow. Graduation from a large opening. down to a shut position. can be achieved to suit the individual needs of your baby. Whichever opening you select. it will always shut between sucks.
The Haberman Feeder may reduce gas. vomiting. and colic. Many babies swallow air while using some ordinary feeders. This is because a vaccum builds up inside the system and the baby must release his lips from the teat to allow air back in. Consequently. air is swallowed with the next mouthful of feed causing gas. vomiting and colic. The Haberman Feeder may reduce air-swallowing. It has a special air inlet groove which allows air in at the same rate as feed is released from the system. There is no vacuum to work against your baby's sucking efforts and air-swallowing is avoided.
Keeping baby at the breast helps preserve the mother-baby bond that only breastfeeding can create. The Haberman Feeder is designed to help you overcome circumstances that might otherwise impede a successful breastfeeding experience.

I bought this bottle as a last resort for my daughter who has special needs. She has a muscle weakness and can't suck well enough to use a regular bottle. She manages up to 6 ounces with this bottle which has meant we have to feed her less with her feeding tube! Result! It has a special valve which means the fluid held in the teat can be controlled by the baby's sucking. This means that the milk doesn't free-flow. so the baby can control the flow better. The teat isn't shaped like most bottle teats. and the baby can take as much or as little of the teat into their mouth as they need to. This is an expensive bottle. but was worth every penny for us as it means our daughter can actually drink from a bottle. Sarah Mum of 2. one with special needs Aug 05.
Money well spent! - We saw the Haberman feeder on The Baby Whipserer show on Discovery Health & deicded it would be an ideal bottle for combining breast feeding and bottle feeding as my partner wanted to be involved too. Although they are expensive. Conor was sick only once in four and a half months on milk! I'm told that's pretty good going! He took to the bottle within a week of being born & had his last night feed from it. His transition to drinking beaker was pretty easy as it has a similar action where if the baby doesn't suck. they don't get milk and hence they don't choke. Although it is primarily designed for babies with feeding problems & special needs I would highly recommend it & will be definately using it again if I have another baby. Nikki NOv 05
I too watched the 'baby whisperer' on the TV and decided there and then the Haberman Feeder was the only bottle I was prepared to use along side the breast. My main reason was the large decrease in colic. My daughter was born weighing in at 9lb 9.5oz... a large. hungry baby! My milk did not come in so I used the Haberman Feeder straight away. NO PROBLEMS. My daughter took to it straight away. She is now 8 months old and I have never looked back. I have not had a single problem with trapped wind or anything else related to bottle feeding. It does have a down fall though. Because the teet is thin and so different to the 'usual' teets. my daughter would not soothe on a dummy (although I didn't want her to have one) and now she is getting older and is able to have juice. she will not accept a normal bottle..... explaining to a baby. who wants to hold her own bottle. that she has to line up the lines to her nose is gonna prove difficult! This is a small price to pay for a colic-less baby! I recommend to everyone and I will be definately be using with my second child. Value for money. I am changing the membrane for the first time in 8 months now. Everything else is still fine. ***** When your baby is eating more than the 5oz and you need a bigger bottle. Save money by buying the normal high street bottles as the cuff fits most bottles. I am currently using the TOMMEE TIPPEE bottles with no problems. Take a cuff shopping to see if it fits before you buy!! ***** Sarah May 06
