Tamba's Medical Research will Save Twin Lives

Tamba is thrilled to be taking its first step into the world of life-saving medical research to benefit multiple birth families and we thought you would like to hear more about it...this is what Tamba had to say in a recent announcement.

It is wonderful that we are finally venturing down this path on our 35th anniversary.  Tamba started all those years ago, with meetings in my front room, started by parents of multiples to help parents of multiples. From these humble beginnings Tamba has grown to be the largest UK organisation supporting families of multiples. Our aim is still the same though, to support multiple birth families in everything we do.

We all hear about the negatives of twin pregnancies, the higher risks to mums and to the babies, and now we have a chance to actually do something about it!  Instead of just making new parents aware of the risks we can help to reduce some of those risks and change clinical practice forever.

We will be studying twin growth patterns in the womb to produce the first accurate twin pregnancy growth charts in the world.  Currently, twins are measured using singleton charts, and clinicians are left to make their own judgements - which will vary from individual to individual - to decide if the babies are progressing well or not.  Specific twin charts will help to reduce errors when making these judgements and will help to prevent families from feeling the unbearable sense of loss caused by a stillbirth, the worry of a pre-term delivery and the stress of any unnecessary intervention. Ultimately tiny twin lives will be saved through our support.

According to the latest stillbirth and Mortality report* twins remain at a much higher risk of stillbirth, neonatal death (death of a baby less than one month after birth) and perinatal death (death of a foetus or newborn from 24 weeks gestation but before 7 days after birth) than singleton babies:

  • Stillbirth risk is 2.5 times higher
  • Neonatal death is 6.4 times higher
  • Perinatal mortality rate is 3.6 times higher

In the 2010 report** 321 twins died as a result of still birth and 405 died in neonatal in a single year. The combined figure of approximately 700 twin baby deaths a year is more than double the number of babies who die of cot death in the UK annually and equates to 24,500 twin babies who have lost their lives since Tamba was founded.   Isn’t it time these risks were reduced?

It is so important this campaign is a success, because if we can raise the money to invest in clinical research, not only will Tamba produce the first ever accurate in utero twin growth charts to help save tiny twin lives, but continue to invest in other medical research in the future.

You can make it a success.  Please help us to invest in a better future for multiples and their families and support our Beanstalk Appeal to raise money for this fantastic new research. Instead of buying a take-away meal or having a trip to the cinema, please help to save twin lives instead. Find out more about the Beanstalk Appeal and make a donation today of 25, or an amount of your choice, at www.tamba.org.uk/Beanstalkdonations

Thank you for helping to give all twin babies a chance of life.
